step by step procedure to set up the StepCraft with LinuxCNC
I want to set up my StepCraft machine so it works with LinuxCNC. At the first step I want to know the required hardware. What I have at this moment is the https://shop.stepcraft-systems.com/usb-module-for-winpc-ncUSB-Module for WinPC-NC Starter. I think I have to replace it with a https://shop.stepcraft-systems.com/parallel-module-lpt1Parallel Module (LPT1). I think if I buy a DB25/LPT cable and then a parallel port PCI express card for my computer I should be able to communicate between LinuxCNC and the machine. Or maybe I have to use a DB25 to USB interface like UC100? I would appreciate if you could help me with this.
Yes, you need the parallel port module for LinuxCNC.
However your PC must also have a low-enough latency (real-time jitter) to be usable with LinuxCNC. Paradoxically, newer models are not usually better suited for this kind of work. So before you buy a parallel port module you should run the latency test from LinuxCNC ( http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Latency-Test).
