I had access to a Bridgeport manual milling machine which I made the plate on. It sits on top of the original wooden bed.

Oh I see so it isn't actually providing any rigidity? Does it still sit completely level?

I used a DTI and its within 0.1 mm front to back left to right. Which is good enough for me.
